Polar Bears are excellent swimmers, regularly swimming distances of 50km or more (30 miles), and occasionally much further as sea-ice coverage continues to decline in the arctic. Occasionally whilst I've been working in the arctic we spot them in open water, far from land, and on a couple of occasions one has swum closely past our vessel whilst at anchor, allowing this close-up photography.
